iPhone particularly popular among the young and the old

pThe iPhone is twice as popular as comparable smartphones among young’uns and older folks. This from a survey conducted by the analysts at mobile advertising firmnbsp;a href=”http://www.admob.com/”AdMob/a, who pollednbsp;a total of 963 iPhone, Android OS, webOS, and iPod touch users on their demographics and usage patterns. The survey was part of an opt-in initiative sent to users on their mobile devices./p

pAccording to the statistics, 14 percent of those on the iPhone were 55 or older, while only eight percent of Android users and seven percent of webOS were in the same age group. Similarly, iPhone users under the age of 17 made up for 13 percent of the sample, while Android and webOS users of the same age made up for less than 10 percent combined. Apple could do especially well if its young iPod touch demographic (65 percent of all iPod touch users were under 17) eventually upgrades to the iPhone, too.nbsp;/p

pIt’s difficult to tell just how accurately the statistics portray the entire smartphone-using demographic. Likewise, without RIM’s series of BlackBerry devices, it’s even harder to see the whole picture.nbsp;Nonetheless, the numbers are at least representative of users receiving ads on the AdMob network, and it seems at least a little curious as to why the upper and lower echelon of age are so heavily in Apple’s favor.nbsp; The teenagers are most likely using the device as a status symbol while thenbsp;handset’s ease of use might have a hand in attracting the older demographic. But twice as much as other smartphones? Let us know what you think./p

iSimulate pipes gestures and more into iPad simulator

Although Apple has yet to announce the exact date when the iPad will ship, or when it will even begin taking iPad application submissions, this lack of information hasn’t stopped developers from working on apps specifically made for the device. Unlike when the iPhone SDK was released, however, developers don’t have devices in hand to test their code on.

A company named vimov is attempting to address this problem with an update to its product for the iPhone and iPod touch, called iSimulate, that now allows developers to pipe accelerometer, multitouch, compass, and GPS data from the iPhone into the iPad simulator. Until now, developers had to make educated guesses based on past iPhone development experience, but iSimulate aims to help make the experience a little more painless.

Setup is pretty simple, according to one developer we spoke to: you only need to add a library into an existing iPad project and then connect to the simulator from the iSimulate client on your iPhone or iPod touch. The same developer, however, informed us that the system was far from perfect. Apparently, it’s virtually impossible to know where you are touching in the simulator until you touch the screen on the iPhone; this is because the application isn’t running on the phone, and instead, only a diagnostic screen is visible. Additionally, the response speed of the simulator leaves something to be desired.

Still, he said the GPS and accelerometer support could be very useful in development, especially since there’s no other way to test this except with an iPhone or iPod touch. If Apple starts taking application submissions prior to the availability of iPad, devs are going to have to rely on applications like this to ensure their applications work properly at launch.

Parental Control glitch gives kids access to App Store porn

iPhone OS 3.x brought us beefed-up parental controls, giving parents finer-grained control over what apps their kids could purchase based on four standard age ratings. A side effect of Apple’s move to have apps rated by age level meant that apps with racier content—essentially soft-core porn—could be approved for sale if was rated 17+. Educator and developer Fraser Speirs has discovered, however, that access is only restricted for purchasing, not browsing in the App Store, which is a real problem in school environments. The glitch has become a huge headache for Speirs’ school, which plans to roll out iPod touches to every one of its 100 students next fall.

Speirs is known for his work for Connected Flow, which makes FlickrExport for Mac and Darkslide for iPhone. During the day, however, Speirs works at Cedars School of Excellence in Greenock, Scotland, where he teaches computer courses and manages the school’s IT. The small, independent school has just 100 students in primary and secondary grades combined. Unable to fund a one-to-one notebook program, the school was able to purchase each student an iPod touch to supplement the strained resources provided by its Mac-based computer lab.

Brief: Report: iPod touch more popular than iPhone this Christmas

If the iPod touch is a gateway drug for future iPhone users, then Apple should feel confident that it will have plenty of future iPhone users after this holiday season. From an analysis of App Store downloads during December 25th, it seems that the iPod touch was a hot, hot gift this Christmas.

According to the latest data from mobile analytics firm Flurry, downloads of apps to iPod touch devices spiked significantly on the 25th—not only far above the average download rate throughout November and December, but 172 percent higher than the spike in downloads to iPhones. App downloads typically track slightly lower for the iPod touch versus the iPhone according to Flurry’s data, which counts whenever an app that uses Flurry’s metrics API launches for the first time. On December 26, iPod touch downloads topped iPhone downloads even while trending sharply down towards more normal levels.

Brief: iPhone blowing up worldwide, big in Japan after all

Apple continues to add more markets for the iPhone worldwide, and the strategy is paying off. The latest analysis from mobile ad firm AdMob reveals that the number of unique users of iPhone OS-based devices is now split 50-50 between the US and the rest of the world. Overall, the number of unique users hitting AdMob’s network from an iPhone or iPod touch has grown 150 percent over the last year. Japan has seen the biggest increase—over 300 percent—which may help explain why the iPhone commanded nearly half of the Japanese smartphone market in 2009.

International iPhone users are growing at a much faster rate than those in the US or Canada, which already enjoy a relatively large installed base. In January 2009, 39 percent of iPhone OS users on AdMob’s network were located outside the US. By the end of last month, international users had grown to 50 percent. UK, France, Canada, Germany, and Australia account for 25 percent of iPhone OS users, or half of all international users. However, AdMob said there are 22 countries besides the US with at least 100,000 iPhone and iPod touch users worldwide. The overall split between the two is 70 percent iPhone, and 30 percent iPod touch.

iPod touch is gateway drug to iPhone for Facebook generation

The iPod touch is often viewed as the de facto replacement for the iPod line, which, despite owning 70 percent or more of the mobile music player market since early this decade, has started to show signs of decline. However, the iPod touch is serving an even more strategic role in popularizing the iPhone OS platform with a younger generation obsessed with social networking and gaming. When the Facebook generation is ready to graduate to a smartphone, chances are good that they will choose the platform on which they’re already hooked.

According to the latest Smartphone Industry Pulse report from analytics firm Flurry, Apple’s iPod touch is growing its share of the mobile device space faster than even iPhone itself, and the combined platform is leaving competitors in the dust. Apple reported that the company has sold about 58 million iPhone OS devices worldwide, and Flurry estimates from its analytics data that approximately 40 percent of those—24 million—are iPod touches.

Latest jailbroken iPhone worm tries filching bank passwords

bank_ars-thumb-230x130-10051-f Latest jailbroken iPhone worm tries filching bank passwords

The second malicious worm to attack jailbroken iPhones has been spotted in the wild, and is the first to directly target users’ bank accounts. Called iBotnet.A by security research firm Intego, the worm tries to steal account logins from customers of popular online banking service ING Direct. Though it only affects iPhones that have been jailbroken by the user with SSH installed, this is clearly a trend that is growing quickly—and one that Apple isn’t likely to care about until it affects “legit” users.

According to Intego, the malware scans for phones on a local network and a range of IPs with an open SSH port, then attempts to log in using the default root password that is the same on all iPhones. This is the same method used by the first malicious iPhone worm that came out earlier this month. The IPs scanned by this particular worm include those in the Netherlands, Portugal, Hungary, and Australia.
