9bc65_thinking-cap Thinking can be a dangerous thing

I read an article about a woman who’s selling her virginity. She claims that she’s already turned down an offer for $1 million, and that she’s been offered $3.8 million. She says that she hopes to find someone who “seems intelligent.” Good luck finding an intelligent man who would pay more than a million dollars for a single night of sex.

But her story got me to thinking about the prospect of being paid almost four million dollars for a single night of degradation? Would I be willing to have sex with just about any disease-free person for that amount of money? I have to say that I would. In fact, I think most people would be crazy not to.

And don’t give me any crap about moral relativism. If I had an extra four million, I could give three million to the Missionaries of Charity in India and save hundreds of lives. So if I said that I would NOT have sex with someone for $4 million, it’s like saying that I would kill hundreds of people in order to avoid having sex one time with a disease-free person. And I think you’d have to be a moral relativist of the worst sort to justify that decision.

But that thought got me to doing some more thinking…

What if someone offered you $4 million to kill someone? Knowing that you could give $3 million to the Missionaries of Charity, could you justify killing a person for that amount of money? Could you justify NOT killing someone for that amount of money?

That’s a purely academic question, of course, since nobody’s going to offer me or you that kind of money to bump someone off. But I’ll bet I could find someone willing to pay me $1,000 to kill someone, and Richard Attenborough says that I can save a child’s life for just 30 cents. So I could save three children and keep $999, or save 300 children and keep $900.

Fortunately, there’s a way to save lots of children without killing anyone. You can go to the online Unicef shop and buy some spiffy swag, thus saving lives without having to worry about being sent to the electric chair. Isn’t the Internet great?
